Class of 2024 Meet and Greet

On June 23, the University of St Andrews NYC Alumni Club hosted its first ever virtual meet and greet for members of the Class of 2024 preparing to move to New York City. This provided the Committee with an opportunity to engage directly with new alumni immediately following Graduation Week; many attendees dialed in directly from Scotland, with the words “et super te” still ringing in their ears!

Moving from one's studies in a town as tight-knit as St Andrews to a career in a city as overwhelming and hectic as New York can be daunting, and we thought it crucial that new alumni be able to experience the sense of community and support from the town by the sea in NYC as soon as possible.

To this end, our opening act in this new frontier of alumni outreach took on a two-pronged approach. In addition to introducing ourselves and providing an overview of our past and future events, this meeting was dedicated to providing an informational presentation and Q&A about how to move to New York City.

During this one-hour event, the committee answered audience questions and discussed topics pertaining to a variety of uncertainties weighing on the minds of future New Yorkers, from the complexities of renting apartments and organizing visas to everyday practicalities such as the idiosyncrasies of the NYC subway - as well as trivial matters such as our favorite bars!

Building upon the excellent audience questions that propelled our discussion, we hope to build up an online resource library to answer the FAQs of new alumni moving to NYC to supplement our young alumni outreach efforts in the future. With the ongoing help of the University’s Alumni and Family Engagement team, we plan to make this an annual event to ensure that St Andrews grads find the move from the Bubble to the Big Apple as seamless as possible.

We hope to see members of the Class of 2024 at our upcoming Welcome to New York drinks in September!
